Nira Trip Review

Todd and I arrived at Nira on Saturday, even as some were still sleeping (the late-risers) - just in time for Nick to share some cooked breakfast with us.  The day-hike to the meadow with the giant oak tree was oh-so refreshing, thanks to the perfect weather we were having.  With all the rain our area has had recently, the runoff water has bolstered the creek to levels unseen in many years.  It was tough to cross the creek and remain dry.  I jumped farther than I ever have before, from one unstable rock sticking up in the rapids, to the scraggly, rooty shore... JUST making it.  Kyle wasn't so lucky, as his right foot didn't catch the earth.  He hiked with one wet foot  Gasp)  I'm pretty sure that everyone except for me had wet shoes.

Xavier, Kyle, Alex and I followed our hike with a chilling dip in the engorged stream behind our camp.  Most partook in snacks and naps.  Doug, the park ranger, brought his little 'pig dog' over to play with us.  Alex peddled his Uno game, so we indulged in that for a while.  Sean, Ted and Joe arrived, showing their pretty faces just for the evening.  Our ritual potluck featured a delish Caeser salad, tasty chicken and rice, savory Italian beef sandwiches, heavenly hamburgers - and what potluck would be complete without Alex's titillating "Carne Estrada?"

Light raindrops did nothing to dampen anyone's spirits.  A campfire ensued, partnered with story-telling, Kyle's silly word games, and topped off with Jean-Guy's hilarious half-way drag performance of Debbie Harry's 1989 hit 'I Want that Man.'  This elicited roaring laughter from all.  Where was the video camera?

The night died down a bit.  We marvelled at the seeming objet d'art that was a brighter-than-normal full moon, complete with spooky clouds drifting past it just as in the creepy werewolf movies.  I clung tenuously to Todd.  Had I heard a howl in the night, I probably would not have been able to sleep.  The reassuring sounds that lulled everybody to slumber though, were those of the rippling stream cascading behind our tents.
